Styling your hair and makeup on your wedding day can be as important as choosing your dress. Your wedding day look is one you’ll likely remember for a lifetime, both in your memories and from pictures of your big day. Do your research (like reading this blog!) to determine what looks will be the best fit for you and your wedding event. As Colorado wedding planners, we’ve planned a number of weddings in the Rocky Mountains. We’ve pulled some of our favorite style photos and tips for hair and makeup mountain-side.

Your Style Comes First

We’ve all seen the stunning wedding inspiration pictures of dresses, hair, and makeup, but what really matters for your look on your big day is your own style. The best dress, hair, and makeup looks are ones you’ll feel comfortable in. Wedding styles come and go, so don’t feel the need to cater to what’s currently popular in the wedding world. Instead, consider your own day-to-day style and appearance preferences to guide your wedding look. You can keep your wedding casual with hair and makeup that’s not too different from your everyday wear, or you can find ways to add some glamour to your look to celebrate and commemorate your special day.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Mountain Wedding

When creating your Rocky Mountain wedding look, consider where your ceremony and reception will take place. Your hair and makeup may look different depending on if your wedding is entirely outdoors or if you’ll be indoors. Makeup looks can also photograph differently outside versus inside. The time of day for your ceremony and reception can also influence your look. Light, natural styles are more popular for daytime events and more glamorous looks are popular for evening weddings.

Keep Weather in Mind

A wedding in the rocky mountains is undeniably gorgeous, but the weather can be unpredictable and different than the weather down in the city. One weather component that you’ll need to keep in mind is wind. While your big day might be sunny and warm, Colorado is a windy state in every season of the year. Consider how easily your hair look might slip free if the weather turns windy. Plan for a mountain-hardy hairstyle that can move freely with the wind or stay tucked in place.

Another Colorado wedding tip to keep in mind is how bright the sunshine is high in the mountains. As you gain elevation, the sun gets more intense. Keep the sunshine in mind no matter the time of year you’re getting married. Include sunscreen in your makeup look to ensure you aren’t rocking a sunburn on your honeymoon.

Insider Tip: Take Your Pictures Early

No amount of hairspray or setting spray will keep your hair and makeup look in perfect shape throughout your ceremony, where there’s sure to be tears, smiles, and plenty of hugs in abundance. Work with your wedding planner to determine the best time to squeeze pictures into the schedule on your wedding day. The earlier in the day your pictures are taken, the more likely it is that your hair and makeup look will have stayed in place. You can also plan to have your hair and makeup stylist on hand for a touch-up after your ceremony, before your pictures are taken, or throughout the night, depending on the package your stylists offer.
